Gibson is way better then Epiphone... I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend. Gibsons range from $1,000-$10,000. If you have that much then go for it. But, if he is just a beginner, and you don't have the money, then go with the epiphone. they range from $200-$1,000. I get all my stuff from a site called musiciansfriend.com, check them out and make your decision.

good luck.

never give anyone a guitar. give him a gift cert and let him pick his own out. you can't decide or pick a guitar that you think is suited for someone. there are hundreds of brands of guitars out there and thousands of styles. gibson and epi's and fenders for that matter are hugely overrated. my good buddy won't play anything but his les paul, but i hate les paul's. to each their own. how i buy guitars.............i determine how much i want to spend. i ask the sales guy to show me every guitar in the store for that price or less and i play every last one of them. and i keep narrowing it down until just one or 2 is left. and another thing............never shop at a huge guitar retail store like guitar center, those sales guys don't know jack about guitars and they only sell a few brands, namely fender and gibson.
