Transmission went out on the 1995 Grand Prix. I took it to an ITI transmission specialist...$2200. does that sound right?

Additional info...there are two places in town that are CERTIFIED to do this kind of repair. One is Aamco and the other is a member of ATRA (or maybe that's ARTA) with a NATIONALLY recognized guarantee on the work. The second place came highly recommended by more than one person. This Grand Prix apparently had some amatuer work done on it at one time which left it pretty much trashed. They are using reconditioned parts (its my 16 year old's car...only need it to last a few years anyway) but it basically needs a whole new transmission plus some critical and over looked upgrades. The only other place I have to take it is Aamco.

When we first got our 96 grand prix we got it for a steal (we thought) cause it needed the transmission rebuilt. It cost us $1900 and it didn't have amateur work done to it, so that may be your price difference, also the area you live in can make a difference as well (cost of living higher=everything else higher). I can say, our we just traded in our 96 GTP (3.4L engine) on a 2004 GTP and it was a great car, well worth having to fix it. It had 320k miles on it when we traded it in and was still running like a pro, and it had been to hell and back more than once, my husband would like to think at times he is a race car driver I think. You can always call around to see what the prices are everywhere else, and I'd ask what exactly the warranty is. Most shops will give you a 3 month 3k miles warranty on their work, and may do it for much less, and I'd say if the transmission makes it that far it should be fine, just depends on how much that extra warranty is, and if you think it is worth it.

transmission repairs in general are not cheap. mostly beacuse to fix anything in the tranny besides draining the fluid and replacing the filter, you have to remove it from the vehicle, and disassemble it. that's where most of the price comes from. the parts to rebuild a tranny are about $300-$400. the rest is mostly just labor. i've had 2 trannies rebuilt both with price tags a little over $2000, so that figure is not outrageous. i just would not get it done at Aamco, they do shoddy work and never wanna honor thier own warranty. they'll always try and tell you that something which is not covered by the warranty caused the tranny to fail once again. check out thier complaints on ripoffreport.com. i know this from first hand experience though. that's why the tranny had to be rebuilt a 2nd time, and done properly.

and once the repair is completed, make sure you get whatever "warranty" they give you in WRITING. you'd be amazed at how unfriendly people get when you tell them "that's not what you said before."

good luck

I advise you to have a new remanufactured transmission from General Motors installed. The cost may be higher, but you'll know your getting a new manufactured rather than "rebuilt" transmission. There's a big difference between the two, including the warranty. I don't know how good the warranty from the shop's you mention is, but I'd rather have a nation wide GM warranty. Another option would be to have a local Jasper Engine and Transmission shop install a new remanufactured Jasper transmission that you can price out online.

That's about the same estimate I got on the same car. This was for a COMPLETE rebuild, including labor and a 50,000 mile warranty. Not out of line, especially for a front-wheel drive vehicle.

Take it somewhere else and get another estimate. I would not pay over $800 tops. If you can`t find it for that price or less something is wrong.
It is a Pontiac (American car) Not a German Mercedes or something like that. Someone is trying to take you to the cleaners.
