I live in Canada. Soon, I am going to Zhejiang university, in China, near Shanghai, to study Mandarin. Do you know about the local culture, people and their sensitivities (what they like, dislike), what to do and what not to do.

Big step... I lived in Shanghai in high school and fell in love with the city and the people. I have also been to Hangzhou, which is very beautiful. I don't know if it is still the same way as it was in 2000, but foreigners were still very much a novelty and you were stared at everywhere, so you get used to that very quickly. Something that was very different for me was that they have a very different feeling about personal space, they don't mind being very close, and personal questions... It is completely appropriate to ask about age, salary, weight and other western no-no's.
While the life is very different there you quickly fall in love with the people who are very friendly when you become a staple in the neighborhood. Have a great time, and visit Shanghai every once in a while, it's a beautiful city!

The University is in the city of Hangzhou which is the capital of the province of Zhejiang. Hanzhou is one of the most beautiful and famous cities in China. Historically, it was the Capital of several dynasties of China. You will visit some interesting and historical sites. Especially the Xihu Lake is very popular. Living in Hangzhou is comfortable because Hangzhouers live leisurely. About 4 million people live in the city. So you have to see many people everywhere very different from Canada. As to the climate, generally, it is mild. The university is one of the greatest universities in China. For the culture, Chinese tradition is the main stream, but also some churches there. In general, it is a tolerate place. I bet you will like it cause I like it. :)
Good luck!
By the way, I have been Hanzhou several years ago. But only once.
