Personally, it will mean more to your parents if it came from you. It will show maturity if you accept responsibility for your actions. If you wait until your teacher calls, they may be more mad due to the fact you didnt tell them first. Remember Truth hurts but it does lead to healing.
When you talk to your parents about this, accept what you did or did not do. Also let them know what you plan to do in the future so you wont let this happen again. Let them know that you are very disappointed in yourself and you will try harder. Let them know that these results are not something that is acceptable to you and you know that they are not happy.
Try to figure out why you made that grade and be honest about it. Was the subject too hard? If so, ask for help. Was the problem about focus and you didnt try as hard in school this time? If so let your parents know that you will get focused.
If you do all of these things, they may go easier on you. Good parents punish and are hard on their kids to teach a lesson. If you come across as already understanding the lesson and what you did wrong and know how to fix the problem, them punishing you wont be as important to them.
Tell them the problem and provide the solution to the problem. How do you plan on bringing up that grade?
By the way... is this D for just one test or a whole grading period? There is a difference. If its just one test, your parents would have to be very anal to get really mad about that. If the grade is for the whole grading period, they will be more concerned. Regardless, the above advice works for both.

I am sure your parent's will understand. Especially if you never got a D before. With a serious face (before your teacher calls them) tell them you have to tell them something very terrible, and you have a big problem, and you don't know how to tell them. Make some sighs, and with a choaking voice start slowly. Meanwhile they are thinking the worst. By that time they will be happy that you problem is only that you got a D.

Lets pretend that I am your dad!
Sweet heaven! Why you have a D! That's it you are grounded for 1 month! No TV, No Phones, No Internet Connection, No Friends, Sleep by 8pm latest, straight to home after school, no music, no...no...no...
Hahaha...joking! Just tell them, parents wont be angry just because of the D, they will be disappointed, but will get over it if they see your D turns to A in a week time.

it depends on the situation. if you did your best, then you should tell your parents that. tell them that you tried to do your best, but you don't know what happened. however if you were just too lazy to study or didn't want to study, then you're on your own kid.
