The longest running TV programme is in fact an American TV show called "Meet the Press" and was first aired 06 November 1947 and has showed to date over 2,600 episodes.

The longest running Drama is Coronation Street and has been running since December 1960 and has had 48 seasons and 6523 episodes, William Roache has spent the longest time in one character role of Ken Barlow.

The longest running children's programme is Blue Peter which first aired 16 October 1958, John Noakes was the longest running presenter from 1965 - 1978.

The Longest running Sci-fi programme is Doctor Who which first aired 25th November 1963, even though the classic series ended in 1989 and one off movie and specials where made the show was re-born again in 2005, it subsequently made the Guinness Book of Records

In UK it's 'The Sky at Night'. Started in 1957. Sir Patrick Moore hold the title in the 'Guinness book of Records' as the longest serving television presenter. Coronation Street isn't even in the running

One of the most popular serials that has been going on and off for many years is of course Dr Who, this has now clocked up 740 episodes over 44 years. And for those who say it has not been running consistantly over all those years, true not on Television, but if you look at the Radio serials, Audio tapes, Books and other items that have come out when the show was not on you will be surprised how much of the series is out there.

I know the longest running "family show" is 7th Heaven.....11 years and going strong. Not sure what the longest running TV show in general is.

Last of the summer wine. It started in 1975 and is still going strong. The are over 300 episodes of it and there has been a new series every year apart from three years when a main actor had died, Michael Bates, Michael Aldridge and Bill Owen.
