The Dangling Conversation
P. Simon, 1966
What is your feeling/interpretation with these words?
It's a still life water color
Of a now late afternoon
As the sun shines through the curtain lace
And shadows wash the room
And we sit and drink our coffee
Couched in our indifference
Like shells upon the shore
You can hear the ocean roar
In the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs
The borders of our lives
And you read your Emily Dickinson
And I my Robert Frost
And we note our place with bookmarkers
That measure what we've lost
Like a poem poorly written
We are verses out of rhythm
Couplets out of rhyme
In syncopated time
And the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs
Are the borders of our lives
Yes, we speak of things that matter
With words that must be said
"Can analysis be worthwhile?"
"Is the theater really dead?"
And how the room is softly faded
And I only kiss your shadow
I cannot feel your hand
You're a stranger now unto me
Lost in the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs
In the borders of our lives

Words from a song are a form of audible communication.

Yes, because you can't understand half the words in some of them.

Have you ever noticed that we have a tendency to let things like a song change our attitude?

This song, for example is about a couple that has lost the romance in their lives. The reason behind that is the writer's concern that they have separate interests, indicated by the reference to what they read. If he hadn't been concerened about their individual interests, he might have just naturally had his, while she had hers, and they had theirs.

Instead, he let it bother him to a point that they no longer even know each other, even though they have been lost in a "dangling conversation," or talking the whole time.

Can you imagine that?

If you read that wrong, you might look at it like he's saying that having individual interests should be avoided. Instead, he's chastising himself for worrying about it.

Why would it not be ok for one to read one thing, and the other read something else?

Regards,

Chris

sure. It replaced into 30 Seconds to Mars' a appealing Lie, so, no, i did not like all of it. i presumed the album artwork replaced into appealing, and enjoyed the songs attack and The Kill. So i offered it, regrettably. I offered it to Rasputin after it sat in dirt for a pair of years. I additionally offered the Black secret's Rubber production unit and Dan Auerbach's shop It hid without till now listening to any tracks off them. yet i admire Rubber production unit, and shop It hid is incredibly solid, too. Wow, now that i verify out my series, i've got offered a remarkable handful without listening to any of the tracks first: Bam Margera's Viva l. a. Bands (that is have been given some solid listens on it), Serj Tankian's % the ineffective (impressive!), and supply 'Em The Boot volume V (back, some solid listens). BA: Sons of Anarchy. i don't watch television very oftentimes, yet I surely love this instruct! BA2: Hershey's Cookies 'n' Cream!

Yeah, sometimes lyrics are hard to understand, hey? It's funny when you discover you've been singing the wrong lyrics for years or when other people do. I like Paul Simon's lyrics. They are always interesting. :)
