it’s true that we’ve traditionally celebrated the beginning of spring on March 21, astronomers and calendar manufacturers alike now say that the spring season starts one day earlier, March 20, in all time zones in North America. Unheard of? Not if you look at the statistics. In fact, did you know that during the 20th century, March 21 was actually the exception rather than the rule?

The vernal equinox landed on March 21 only 36 out of 100 years. And from 1981 to 2102, Americans will celebrate the first day of spring no later than March 20. :

The date (March 21 in the northern hemisphere) when night and day are nearly the same length and Sun crosses the celestial equator moving northward. The vernal (spring) equinox marks the first day of the season of spring. The right ascension at the vernal equinox originally was in the constellation Aries and the point of crossing was known as the first point in Aries (now actually in Pisces).

Because today we are closer to mid summer(21st June2007) than mid winter (22nd December 2006)

Today is called the spring equinox, which means it is the equal distance between the suns summer high and its winter low. The autumn equinox is on 23rd September.

Enjoy the next 6 months before the darkness and cold draws in again!

Spring begins on the day where the sun is directly above the equator and the amount of daylight equals 12 hours. It drifts between the 20th and 21st of March depending on how close we are to a leap year. This year it started on the 21st for anyone using universal time and anything eastward (Europe etc) and the 20th for places west (Greenland, the US etc).
