why is it called like that..tooth like in teeth???

It is a small check pattern with somewhat sharp edges reminding one of teeth, not the typical square checks. the Prince of Wales said a houndstooth tie was for weddings in the 1930's. I have a pair of black & white houndstooth check pants someone gave me for Xmas. I woudn't buy them myself, and I rarely wear them.
