Probably a variant of Loretta which itself is derived from Laura, feminine form of the Late Latin name Laurus, which meant "laurel". In ancient Rome the leaves of laurel trees were used to create victors' garlands. Saint Laura was a 9th-century Spanish martyr, a nun who was thrown into a vat of molten lead by the Moors. Another famous bearer was Laura Secord, a Canadian heroine during the War of 1812.

The most common spelling is Loretta, a diminuitive of Laura from the Latin word for Laurel. I would guess that the spelling Lawretta is based on the male name Lawrence, which is itself a variation of Laurence again meaning Laurel. In ancient Rome winners were crowned with garlands of laurel so the meaning can be extended to mean victor.

Are you trying to spell Loretta in a "unique" way? Lawretta sounds very ghetto but spelled Loretta, it is a bit old fashioned but nice.

Lauretta/Loretta/Laure etc should help ou find info, but I think you should drop the W. She'll spend her life trying to get people to spell her name right.
