Start by contacting the bank. In most cases an account that has laid dormant for that long has escheated to the state. The bank can tell you if the funds have been transferred to the state.

If that has happened you'll have to contact the state agency that manages escheat funds and prove your ownership of the funds. It's still your money and will be released to you upon proof of ownership. Note that once property escheats to the state it will no longer earn interest even if the bank account was interest bearing.

Ring the bank and they will arrange for you to meet with a manager. You will need ID and maybe even proff that you lived in the address from when you had your bank account. If it was one of the large banks I'm sure they'll sort this out quickly for you. You can always try citizens advice too but I'm sure the bank will sort things out for you and maybe even give you interest. Good luck!

contact the bank. In most countries, however, after 17 years, the account would be dormant, suspended and turned over to the Superintendent of Banks.
