Actually they are set up that way because they thought this was the idea position of letters. Ideal position in the sense that the ones in the index finger are most frequently typed while the ones further away are less frequently pushed. That is why Z is in the bottom left (a hard key to push).

However in reality there is another keyboard (dvorak) which has been proven to be even more efficient and has been tested to be a faster keyboard when typing. The reason we did not adopt this new system is because the whole world would have to re-learn how to type and in result yielding with more problems. The majority of the world uses the QWERTY keyboard with minor alterations.

Calculator and keyboard layout are the same. You're thinking phone and keyboard/calc.

Your keyboard is called qwerty which is the top left keys...see? But they do sell alphabetical keyboards. Qwerty is set up for convenience. See where the most used letters are? Waaay back in the day, there was TYPING class, not keyboarding.

Because there are too many illiterate people, so it doesn't matter the order of the keys on the keyboard, it still takes them half an hour to type a misspelled word.

It is easier to type with the letters arranged the way they are. It would be so much more difficult to type if the letters were in alphabetical order.

Because if they were, then it'll be EASY to type on the keyboard. But non-alphabetically, it's a more challenge.

it would be much harder to learn to touch type if they were. They have been set out in an order that is easy to learn to type without looking at the keys - i touch type. I cant actually type looking at the keys anymore!!!

the letters that are used alot are positioned to take advantage of natural hand positions and the fingers that are more adept (aka pointer finger)...yes...some idiot actually thought this stuff up. probably agonized over it...lost sleep over it. And I am pretty satisfied with what they did.
