How soon can I test? Well, first you gotta know how the test works. Briefly: the home pregnancy test (HPT) works by detecting a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG.) When an egg is fertilized, it takes about 6 to 12 days to implant in the uterus, and then it begins to secrete hCG. It takes another day or two for enough hCG to build up and make its way into your pee. So, generally speaking, the earliest you can expect a positive HPT is 8 days past ovulation ("DPO") and the latest would be about 16 DPO. It is possible to get a positive test earlier or later, but not as common. In my experience, if you use a sensitive "early" test (anything that detects 25 mIU/mL of hCG or less) you can test around 12-14 DPO and feel reasonably secure with your results (the later you test, the more secure you can feel in its accuracy.)

If you do not chart or monitor your fertility in any way, and you think you may have conceived, you should wait 19 days (or longer) after having sex to test. Why 19?! Sperm can live approximately 5 days in the proper environment; if the sperm managed to live until you popped an egg, the actual conception could have taken place several days after the sex act that got the sperm there. To make sure you're not testing too early, assume the sperm had very long lives (5 days is considered a very long sperm life) and that conception occurred then. Then allow 14 days for the embryo to implant and develop enough hCG to show up on a pregnancy test (96% of pregnant women will test positive by then.)

You can test using regular home pregnancy tests from the day your period is due (or missed), although some brands are more sensitive and allow you to test up to four days before your expected period (clear blue & first response).
It is best to buy a double test pack as some women dont produce enough of the pregnancy hormone until a bit later. You may want to re-test about 1 week after your missed period if it still hasnt come on & if the first test was negative.

Most pregnancy tests are 99% reliable if used from the first day of a missed period.
Some claim to work up to 4 days before a missed period, but they are less accurate in those days and you might get a negative even if you are pregnant.
You will not get an accurate result if you test a few days after sex. You are not producing enough hcg (the pregnancy hormone) at that point to get a positive result, even if you are pregnant.
Reading the box of any pregnancy test will confirm this.

You can try with an early detection PT like First Response up to 5 days before your missed period. Although if it is negative, there is still a chance you're pregnant.
To get the most accurate result from a HPT you should take the test 3-5 days after your missed period.
And of course, the most accurate test altogether is a blood test at your doctors office.
Good luck to you!

I would try a test a few days after your skipped periods. Those tests that say they detect pregnancy up to five days before your skipped period are total rubbish. They never worked for me.

pregnancy tests are now accurate to the day of your expected period. I tested on the day my period was due with both pregnancies and was big style possitive. Good luck hope the results are what you are hoping for x

It varies. My mom took the pee-on-a-stick test soon after I was conceived, and it marked positive. (But she also went to the doctor and his test said negative. Yet here I am.)

most tests these days say they are accurate from the fist day of a missed period but you'd have to know your dates pretty well.
