soviet was a christian nation before accepting communism. the belief is implanted in their consciousness and you cant erase that.

Whether or not any nation is a Christian nation is open to debate (look at the actions of inidividual nations, they are suspect).

The Orthodox church or at least their beliefs never left russia under communism although it may have gone underground. Various protestant groups always had missionaries there-again underground. Plus due to mass communications, radio and tv followed by the internet, they were always be exposed to religion. Russia gave up communism after the rest of the european countries and they exposed them to religion. There are also a few cases of being given "inspiration from above". When all are lumped together, it is not surprising that russia is becoming more "religious" minded

The Communist Soviet Socialist Party that ran the Soviet Union was atheistic.

But the majority of the non-communist party people just hid their Christian beliefs until it was safe to practice them again.

Christianity thrives when it is persecuted.

Russia has no reason not to accept Christianity or Catholicism anymore. The Cold War is over.
