Cedar is great mulch. It has natural toxins against bugs. Cedar chests have long been used to prevent bug damage to natural fabrics, for that reason. The aromatic smell is actually phenols that repells bugs.
It's advised that cedar not be used for pet bedding, because the toxins are strong enough to threaten the health of the pet.
But it makes a great mulch, plus it doesn't rot away as fast as other types of mulch.

They are correct. Cedar is the best mulch to use. Bugs hate cedar.

Cedar is one of the better bug repelant woods because of it smell.
