This means that the starter is able turn the engine over but the engine will not fire. There is problems with the ignition system or electrical components that are imperitive to the operation of the engine. If the engine didn't rotate with the starter engaged then it is a bunch of other potential problems that are harder to explain.

The starter is an electrical motor. When you turn the key to "START" position, you are running the starter motor. When the starter motor runs, it turns or rotates the crankshaft inside the engine. When the engine has the correct amount of fuel, air, and spark, it should start when the starter motor is engaged.

means the pistons were moving when the starter start to cranking..(ever seen old-old charlie chaplin era where ones have to turn the crank at the front of the car to make it start?) well basicly thats the starter.. the starter make the crankshaft start to rotating / then moving the piston up-down
