It ended on 31/01/07. He still can't be bothered to sort it out - what kind of fine is he likely to get?

I'll laugh so much if it's a lot.

Chris S - Yes the car is insured and he drives it every day. His excuse is he's mucked up the form so he can't renew it. Yeah like the DVLA are gonna worry about that!

My boyfriend's mate is hired to check out untaxed vehicles...and then clamp a sticker on them to get towed away. So they would get an automatic fine from the DVLA of £80 I think, plus charges for towing and getting car back.

Haven't you seen the ads on TV, the DVLA computer knows immediately when you car tax has run out, indeed it sends you a bloody reminder telling you when it's ABOUT TO run out - I believe the fine is £80 at the moment but I might be out of date and it might have gone up - you can be damn sure it's not gone down though!

If you don't tax your vehicle on time you will receive a penalty of up to £80. If you continue to drive without a valid tax disc you could be fined a minimum of £1,000.

Every month the DVLA will carry out computer checks to identify vehicles that do not have a valid tax disc. They don't need to see your vehicle on a public road to find out if its tax disc is up to date. They just need to check their computer, which stores details about every registered vehicle and vehicle keeper in Great Britain. Even if you don't pay for your tax disc - for example, if your vehicle is in an exempt taxation class - you must still display your tax disc and it must be up to date.

He will get an automatic fine of £60 from the DVLA.

If its not paid after 30 days, they will issue court proceedings and the cost will go to £100

In some areas untaxed cars are being seized & towed away. Your "friend" might have a nasty surprise!
