Sapphire-it's my birthstone and also it can display a property known as asterism, which makes it a star sapphire!

Garnets are also really fun because they're good indicators of formation environments and also in New York, we have a lot of them. Gore Mountain has garnets (fractured, but still holding together) as big as your fist...neat!

And last but certainly not least, calcite because I'm studying Paleontology and it helps preserve my fossils:)

Im sort of partial to chert. The typical, textbook chert that you see in your 100 level labs, not the boring stuff from oceanic drill cores. For some reason I always thought it was cool. Weird, because im an experimental igneous petrologist by training. I hate sedimentary rocks.

Kyanite was a good answer. Very unique. Hematite would be on my list too. Galena would be there. And Olivine.... but probably just because its so easy to recongize in thin section.

I agree with the answerer above... Quartz is awesome. It has a cool name, it has a very cool looking crystal structure (not to mention the awesome variety of colors you get in the crystals), and quartz is a large component of the granitic rocks that make up the continents. So you can thank quartz for the fact that you are not a fish.

I'll give a shout out to Tourmaline and Kyanite. Not the most popular but pretty, and easy to distinguish.

Hmm, it would have to be the hydrothermally altered rocks you find near volcanoes. Often referred to as Fubarite

A toss up between basalt and gneisses.
I find them very beautiful.
