I was thinking about getting a Chevy Cavalier. I don't have a lot of money and I want a nice used car that's not going to break down a lot and give me good gas mileage

American cars are not the most reliable. I suggest you substitute that Cavalier for a Corolla, Tacoma, Civic, Accord or Camry

Japanese are definitely your best bet. Also great on gas. And yes gas should come into your mind when you see today's gas prices just over three bucks a gallon

Ford concentration could be your ultimate wager. they look remarkable interior and out, and that they are (now) lots of the main solid autos on the line. (that they had a attractiveness for falling aside, and it replaced into real, yet they have thoroughly became themselves around.) in case you flow slightly used, they get plenty extra low priced. The Chevy Cavalier is a solid selection, and extra low priced, whether that is not as flashy because of the fact the concentration (extra often than not interior the interior). There are 2 Chevys in that length: the Cavalier and the Cruze. The Cavalier is the value selection selection, whether that is nevertheless a solid motor vehicle. The Cruze is impressive--feels like a miniature version of their award-prevailing Malibu--yet is lots extra costly. in case you could flow smaller, I hear the Ford Fiesta is a huge motor vehicle. i don't comprehend plenty concerning to the Chevy Aveo, yet i've got not heard something approximately it, so i'm guessing that is much less superb than the Fiesta. i might stay removed from manufacturers different than Ford and Chevy. a large style of the different American manufacturers are not relatively as much as par with the contest, right here or foreign places.

I dont think that reliable, American, and good on gas all belong in the same sentence. You might be better off replacing American with Japanese, but then you will have to spend more money. I used to have a 1995 For Escort and it was cheap, good on gas, and reliable when compared to other American cars. I had it for 2 years and had to replace the tie rods twice, the radiator, and alternator. It never left me stranded anywhere which is more than I can say about other cars. Cavaliers tend to be a little weird. I have heard of some running to 200,000 miles with little problems, but I have known 3 people with them and they all fell apart with under 100,000 miles. A used Honda Civic would be your best bet and after 1998 or so they were made in America.

I own a shop, and would say you have made a good choice. The Cavalier happens to do very well in that department. My nephew had one, and if it held up to him, then I would say it must be a good car. This boy could break a rock pile! He is hard on vehicles, and beats them to no end, so I would say any car that would stand up to his abuse, would last a long time for someone who took care of it.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

You could try a Ford Focus, from 2003 after the recalls subsided.

The Ford Taurus (2000-current) you could pick up at a great price since their depreciation was hit hard since many went to rental fleets. And both 3.0L were reliable overall...also it's the cheapest insurance in it's segment because it was also the safest in crash testing in it's segment for it's time.

Saturn SL's were pretty reliable, although once you go over 100K miles, I've noticed some oil leakage here and there but overall they are reliable in comparison.

Hope this helps :-)

The cavalier is not reliable.
The best you could get is the Geo Prizm(It has a toyota engine).
Or a mazda protege(has ford focus chassis). These are only part american but they are very reliable and cheap. Usually priced for around $2000 and get average of 35mpg.

How about a used Chevy Lumina?
Or how about a used BMW Z-4 which was made in N. Carolina.
