Good question!
First, the Prussian General Staff formulated a plan involving a rightward sweep around the Allies through the Low countries, even after the value of this strategy was over with.
Second, there was poor communication between the various elements of the German forces (this was true of the Allies also, but the consequences are less for the defenders.)
Third, Germany needlessly provoked the U.S. into the War. Although our military contribution was very small, the logistical forces we could bring to bear were gong to be enough to cripple the German war effort.
Fourth, like Hitler later, the Germans embarked on a two front war.
Fifth, although not a military man, the Kaiser took control of military strategy to a great extent, not only directly but also through "firing" and supporting various commanders---again foreshadowing Hitler.
While none of these factors alone resulted in defeat, together they produced insurmountable obstacles.
