Yes, many illegal immigrants and overstayers cannot be deported under current rules because they have to be returned home on a direct flight and very often there is none to their country. One solution would be to charter direct flights in which to return them, but this is not done.

The presence of so many people who are not lawfully in Britain is a serious burden on the economy and on facilities. It also leads to bad feeling on the part of the public at large towards people who are in the UK legitimately, as resentment grows generally at the way in which things are being handled. This is perhaps the nub of your question. The frustrating thing is that the tools are available to deal with the growing problems, but there seems to be no political will to use them.

Indian doctors and nurses are badly needed in their home country, India. If they had gone into their profession for the right reasons, and not just to get maximum income, they should be in India helping the wretched people to better health.
To a point, immigration helps the UK economy. It is argued that many immigrants will do the jobs that UK workers will not do. But this is misguided because if we have a pool of cheap labour (immigrants) who will do these jobs, then a) employers will rather employ them, b) UK workers will tend to look for better paid jobs and shun the 'dirty' ones. In countries where immigration is low, wages for such jobs have to be raised to attract native workers. They tend to get a better class of workers, thus at the same time raising the status and repectability of these jobs.
The solution is to deport quickly illegals, tighten border control, lengthen the period of stay and impose more conditions (language skills, knowledge of culture, integration, etc.) necessary for acquiring citizenship, and deport excess and redundant migrants (non-UK) whose skills are no longer needed even if they came in legally.

If you think about the work a doctor and nurse have to do it is quite daunting, hence we need these highly skilled individuals. Doctors are paid more reflecting their precise value as not everyone can become a doctor. That's just my humble opinion.
