If you had to actually live in Malta and use buses every day (like i do...I'm maltese)...you'd soon realise how terribly DANGEROUS those old buses are...god knows how many regulations they breach!!!!! The door is open, anyone could fall out, the engines are usually loud and obnoxious, the windows are so difficult to open and close, and the seats aren't so comfortable either. And elderly or disabled people can absolutely FORGET climbing up those high yet narrow stairs to get into the bus.
The only thing that really bothers me about the new coach-like buses is the fact that there should be more ventilation.... the windows that can be opened are too small. In summer it gets horribly stuffy in there. Otherwise, they're a LOT better than those old ones.
by the way, Jovigirl...the EU has just done that!!!!

i live in Malta now, and yes its true, the old charismatic buses are being fazed out slowly and replaced with newer ones. They arent as quaint, but they are better for the environment. I too prefer the older buses, they add character. Only problem with the new buses is that the windows dont open and during the summer months its brutal inside the bus, as there isnt any airconditioning. The older buses all had sliding windows you could open to get a lovely breeze in!. Shame really, but there you have it.

its such a shame. i went last year and they already had these great big coach looking buses! not the same I;m afraid! I loved it when Malta had more horses then cars on the road! becoming very commercialised now!
The buses are changing because their old ones are a danger to the public! i dont think its to do with the EU regulations. But more for safety!

I don't know, but I very much hope it isn't true. Those grand old buses certainly add a lot of character to the island and they are fantastically cheap as well.

They look great for the tourists, but what about us poor folk who have to travel on them every day to work? I used to live in Marsascala and went to work by bus to St Julians you feel every bump on the road, burn your butt on the seats when its sunny, no air conditioning and smelly and dirty, so i was so happy to see the new busses, so comfortable and cool in the summer. So I say, keep the old busses for the 62 route and the mdina route for the tourists to see, and get the new ones for the locals....
So, yay, woohoo to the EU... :)
