The most common painkiller/anti-inflammatory is bute, or Phenylbutazone. This is usually provided by the veterinarian and most horse owners like to keep some on hand in case of emergencies. The second most common painkiller is probably banamine, or Flunixin Meglumine. Like bute, this is usually provided by the vet.

Banamine and phenylbutazone (referred to as bute) are two of the most common pain killers for horses. Both are anti-inflammatory drugs.
The drug Ketamine was mentioned. Yes, ketamine is a pain killer but is not used as a general pain medication. Ketamine is used during surgery when the horse is under general anesthetic along with other sedation drugs.
I keep both bute and banamine in my tack box. I only use banamine if my horse has colic - I use bute if she is a bit lame due to muscle or tendon soreness.

Phenylbutazone (bute) is the painkiller most commonly prescribed by vets in the uk, there are lots of herbal painkillers, devils claw etc.
Please remember that medication for any animal should only be administered under veterinary advice.

"Bute" (Phenylbutazone) is a very common pain killer and anti-inflammatory used for horses with mild lameness or stiffness problems.

There are "natural" alternatives called No-Bute, Bute-Less, and Bute-X
