If you are looking for a mathmatical formula then it depends on the shape.
E.g. a box is length x breadth x height.
E.g. a sphere is 4/3 x pi x radius cubed
E.g. a cylinder is pi x radius squared x length
If you want to physically measure the volume of something then you can fill a bucket to the very top with water, immerse the object and measure how much water is displaced; the volume will be the same.

If it is a regular solid, such as a cube or cuboid, then length x width x height will suffice. If it is an irregular shape, such as the sort of shape a child would draw to represent a house (a cube with a triangular prism on top) then you would need to separate the individual shapes, calculate the individual volumes, and then add them together.

If the item is RECTANGULAR, or SQUARE, then, take the measurements of all sides, - including the DEPTH.
Then, MULTIPLY the LENGTH, by the WIDTH, - and, multiply THAT answer, by the DEPTH
For example, - if you have a BOX that is 10 centimetres LONG, 14 centimetres WIDE, and 6 centimetres DEEP, - the WRITTEN calculation, would look something, like THIS:
10 x 14 x 6 = 840
Thus, the answer to the calculation, is 840 CUBIC CENTIMETRES!

You would really have to say what the "something" is.
Assume dimensions are in cm.
Volume of cuboid = l x b x h cm³
Volume of sphere = (4/3).π.r³ cm³
Volume of prism = (Area of base) x height
A cylinder is a prism of circular base so :-
Volume of cylinder = π.r².h cm³
A triangular prism of vertical height H and base a and height h has a volume given by:-
Volume of prism = (1/2).a.h.H cm³
A prism of square base of side l and height h has a volume given by:-
V = l ². h cm³

It's quite simple for a cube or cuboid, all you do is the same as area but times it by the width of the shape as well!
The formula is:
V=l x h x w
which means...
Volume=Length x Height x Width
So imagine you have a cuboid...
H= 4
W=3
L=6
Then all you do is H x W = 4x3 = 12
Then times that by the width. 12 x L =12 x 6 = 72 then the units are cubed so imagine this is measured in centimeters. And the volume is 72cm cubed.
But the formula for volume is different depending on what shape it is, for example pyraamids ans spheres.
You can find all these on :

If it is an irregular object, use Archemedies principal. Or draw in in 3d in autocad and find volume.

It is different by the thing.
If it is a cube volume equals to length*width*height,
If it is cylinder volume equals to height*radius*π*π.
