Please help me, I am Australian and I can't really say the letter 'r' when it begins a word (ie. rock). I can sort of say it but it isn't as clear as it could be.

In the middle of words, my r is fine (ie. carrot, lorry), and I don't say them at the end of the words since my accent isn't like that.

So how do you say an 'r' at the start of the word?

Practice "Ra" with a slight shiver in the tongue. Place the tip of tongue on your palate (top of mouth) and blow air slowly through the raised tongue. This should be a good practice.

The /r/ exercise begins by having the patient open the mouth wide and say "ah." You should keep the voice going as the tongue is cupped (inside the mouth).

As the lateral segments of the tongue contact the upper molars and the apex of the tongue is positioned in the palatal arch, you should hear the /r/ sound. It is important, kinesthetically, to feel the contact of the sides of the tongue pressing against the upper molars. The stronger the contact, the sharper the /r/ sound.

You then should say "ah" and slowly cup the tongue to get the /r/ sound. This should be done often, and the patient should attempt to do it faster.

Good luck mate.

I went to one of the vital H.O.R.D.E. Festival suggests again within the mid-'90s. Great invoice ... I recall Beck and Ben Folds Five had been there. But the spotlight was once looking Neil Young. He was once one of the vital headliners, and he got here on after darkish. Keep in brain this was once an outside exhibit ... it had already began to rain and lightning. When he took the degree, a thunderstorm had rolled in, and the rain was once pouring down in sheets, simply rolling down the auditorium ground like a waterfall and pooling in entrance of the degree. Then a lightning strike knocked out the vigor ... however Neil stored gambling! He did not leave out a beat! The complete auditorium was once darkish besides for a couple of candles Neil had burning on degree, and he was once crouched over his guitar, ripping by way of the solo to "Like a Hurricane" -- how proper! Everyone was once looking to accumulate down via the degree, considering the fact that the one sound was once coming from the degree displays, which have got to were on a few variety of backup vigor. THAT was once a pleasant night time. I've been to approximately 50 concert events, however that was once the exceptional.

I had a speech therapist in elementary school who helped me learn to pronounce my "r." It took a lot of practice. The sides of my tongue touch the last molars on my upper teeth. I can feel them when i say, "er."

Feel where your tongue is when you pronounce the "r" in carrot and lorry. It should be in the same position for an r at the beginning of a word.

My brother in law couldn't say the r in Ryan as a kid. So he would growl and say grrrrryan. It worked. Might only want to do it when practicing alone though.LOL.
