I think people need to be realistic and not have what is called 'pie-in-the-sky' fantasies about existence. My mother grew up in France during and after WWII. She saw Paris bombed and what the Nazis did--relatives arrested, people disappearing, starvation, looting, burning of villages, massive thefts--that was her childhood. Then her father went into the Algerian War of Independence. There were arrests throughout the city, bombs going off down south, civil rights violations against Algerians, confrontations in the streets, that kind of stuff. A lot of poverty and alcoholism in her family, on her father's side, was around. People have a hard time with that stuff.
So I suggest you remember what your relatives went through and be thankful you didn't have to live that life. It was much worse for them than for us. Be tolerant and happy-go-lucky. Be smart and serious when it's time to be. Educate yourself.
This stuff going on around the world--Chechnya, Somalia, Lebanon, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Iraq--is very sad. Zimbabwe is very sad. Give some money to an organization to help them. Vote. Speak out against that sort of thing. Go to a fundraising event or sit-in for peace. This stuff really helps. Do not get lost in this stuff. It is not to anyone's benefit to be literal, miserable, lost and profound in these times. Someone flipped out at me for asking a question about poetry, an interest of mine.
I am not going to sit at home alone, crying my heart out with a bottle of lousy wine, a blanket and a headache. I am not going to entertain thoughts of misery over this stuff. Just as when a relative dies, you mourn, you also celebrate his life and hold onto the wonderful memories. I would rather leave a candle and flowers on a grave than sit around for years crying my heart out. It is not selfish to go on with life. It is right.

My biggest problem today ?
Whether to take my Lear jet or the chauffeured limousine to work this morning.
I wish.
Just earning enough wedge to pay the mortgage is my biggest daily problem.

Accepting the things i cannot change. But i feel empowered in the things that i can and it is my plan to do my best to shine a little light in this world - add a little beauty, plant a few trees. The world is still beautiful, despite the evil.

My biggest problem is the sheer size of my house and garden, which need to be in good order until Friday evening, as we will have guests and want to make a good impression. Procrastination, procrastination. Luckily we have yahoo answers and questions, as this lets me so nicely forget about it.

doubting myself and not letting anyone near me because i'm afraid of being helpless--don't ask, it is a strange logic that brings those two things together. :P to me, being helpless is the worst feeling in the world. anything that brings that on will not last long in my eyes.
