Has any locals got some knowledge or hints on how to book a hotel room when we dont seem to be having much luck!

it's the height of Cherry Blossom season.. BIG celebration time for the Locals. you will be hard pressed to find anything.

I am sorry to tell you this but you could not really have picked a worse time to see Kyoto.
Try looking on the internet for business hotels........they might have some empty rooms but not for long.
One thing to consider is staying in Osaka and taking the train to Kyoto each day......it is a 40 minute trip and cheap.

Are you using the www or phoning. I find they ignore the net but respond well with a phone call. Worked for me a week ago. If you don't speak Japanese, ask if someone there speaks english - bigger hotels often do.

Option two is to risk it and just turn up on the day you arrive. It should be OK this time of year.
