Norton and mcafee are known for using allot of computer recources, but they are both in the top ten list......

2007, zone alarm has been rated by more companies as the top performer, over any other security suite on the market this year...because of its ease of use, malware detection, and its not so demanding when it comes to resources.....

In protection circels, the coolest ones are: a million) Bit Defender 2) Kasperski 3) Eset 4) F-preserve each and each grant stunning detection and removing of Malware. even with the undeniable fact that, the main suitable technique of handle Malicious utility is to no longer get contaminated in the 1st place. as quickly as contaminated, i'll purely do an entire format and re-installation. No protection utility can easily assure a equipment is freed from malware. the main suitable approach is: a million) test all downloads until now executing them with detection utility that has good definitions besides as progressed heuristics that no longer purely seems for a record's "fingerprint" yet malware features besides. 2) computer screen outgoing and incoming information superhighway connections. on an analogous time because it is good to seek for listening sockets, with SOHO router firewalls so straightforward malware now makes opposite connections to a server technique. 3) that's the main severe: person conduct. in case you get carry of torrents, and installation stuff off record sharing networks, your gonna get contaminated, except you particularly, extremely, extremely understand what you're doing. 4) replace protection utility, the working equipment, and ALL different utility religiously.

The one you don't have to pay for. No, really imo the best way to go for the money is http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp

Kaspersky has a great detection rate and that is free.

ummmm......
oks
the only thing I have is QuickHeal's Internet security.
You see, what others are having on there PC.......
I'll repeat it here: -

Kaspersky Antivirus.
Avast Antivirus.
AVG Antivirus.
NOD32.
Norton.
QuickHeal Antivirus.
Zonealarm
System Mechanic/Kaspersky kit
McAfee.
Prevx1
..............
.....
..

these were some of the examples with which you protect your PC form getting infected. Others like Spybot S&D, webroot's spysweeper, Sana Security's Primary Response Safe Connect, etc are also available in the market.
If I go to the vendor and do ask for one(like I asked for QuickHeal), I'd always keep in mind how best any security engine is compatible to my PC. To the kind of work I do on my PC. Also to the kind of people going to use the PC except me.
Every factor you consider, helps you from wasting your money on different security items.

If I'm an advanced user, then I'd go for Kaspersky Internet security or Bit Defender or sometimes QuickHeal or ZoneAlarm, etc. Products like Jetico firewall do ask you a lot of questions.......but only once. they learn more as you use them and finally are a good solution.
If I'm someone a Ok-OK/moderate user........then I've a long list of products like McAfee, Norton, QuickHeal, Kaspersky Antivirus(only), Avast, AVG, etc etc.
If you are a beginner in the world of viruses, you have very less recommendations like McAfee, Norton, QuickHeal, Avast and AVG or some 2-3 more but not enough.

Instead of thinking like this, here you might get no answer to what actually you should use...... It'd be better go like the dependencies I said before: task you do, time you have for your PC, Kind of people, Compatibility and your risk to Viruses.

I'll categorize the good available products we have for....
AVG: for users to whome PC speed is much of concern than PC security, AVG is very low on resources, good detection, offers about 94% detection(means outta every 100 it leaves 6 viruses running.)

Avast!:for users that can compromise with the little deduction in speed of PC, better than AVG in detection(offers 96%), has repair feature that's not in AVG. others are same. both AVG and Avast are equal entirely.

Kaspersky Internet security: for users those can't allow reduction in speed(but still it's not ideal) but can spend some time for the training sessions of the firewall and Proactive defence feature it has, best detection by Kaspersky lab(offers 99%), low on system resource usage, can repair also.

QuickHeal Total Security: for moderate/advanced users depending upon the type you buy, they detect viruses using DNA methodology and simply offer above any of the most popular antiviruses but I shall say it's not better than Kaspersky's 99% detection. Very low on system resources(made in VB), easy to use(has no annoying popup questions) , for those who can't afford much time to any training sessions etc.

McAfee/Norton: McAfee's detection module is very weak, Norton is the better option in this. Both are very high on system usage but people say they are secure than any other. for people who are starting any buisness and need some security option on their servers etc. Norton is the best option if you are such a kind. Detection of Norton is what everyone knows, better in one or the other way to most antiviruses.

.........
.....
..etc

finally, I'm a moderate user, cann't spend enough time on training sessions, and needs a proper/professional security on my PC. Now you might see a very good reason why I've selected QuickHeal than any other. So......think like this and you'll be happy with whatever you buy or use free products.
Even if you leave your PC antivirus-free it's sometimes a better option, like if your PC is slow. But some threats are like even if you open any mail box or surf secure sites you get infected, so, I won't recommend leaving PC's free from security barriers.

Above if you see, I've most written for Total/Internet securities.......because it always consume less memory and CPU time, a different combination always makes a man suffer, because every new tool you run eats away a lot of memory just by using similar multiple copies of files and dlls of what another tool on the same PC might be using. hence, compatibility factor with complete kits is already covered.

GoodLuck,

Trend PC cillan is very good. I don't recommend Norton, it uses too many computer resources i.e. slows down your computer too much.
