Hello all,

I'm about to buy a 2001 Freelander Serenghetti Edition.with the Hardback for the princely sum of £4000.00
Can anyone give me some buying advice? It's the 1.8 K series engine wich I know has head gasket trouble, but that doesnt bother me (i drive an MGF which went 80k without blowing it, besides). It's only covered 34000 miles (owned by a rich mans wife and was used to walk the dog and do lunch!) with a full history and appears to be in A1 condition with the exception of a scratched boot interior from the dog.

I'm buying it because I go on and off building sites a lot (not becuase I need achelsea tractor!), so I dont need the diesel model to pull anything, and the Japanese alternatives look so damn agricultural next to the reelander, not to mention they're considerably pricier the the Hippo.

Do they have any particular areas I need to pay special attention to other than the obvious head gasket woes?

Thanks in advance

This model is booking at £4400 trade in Glass' guide, so the price is about right as not many dealers would give book price for a 1.8 freelander, it is a good price for a private sale because the difference between the trade & retail price is a massive £2400 most dealers would have this vehicle up at least £5999 on a forecourt some even more.
If your happy with it go for it, maybe get the head pressure checked before doing a deal, i recently sold a freelander with only 22'000 geniune miles and full history but it still had head problems. The joys of the K-series engine.
Also check all electric windows and make sure the abs light goes off at 5mph.

First of all, that engine has had a much easier life in a lightweight MGF than it's had in a Land Rover, which must weigh a good 1500-1600kg.
Secondly, it's a very low mileage for a 2001 car. If it's genuine, then it's been used for lots of short runs only, which is a good way to wreck any engine.
Thirdly, it's an early example of the Freelander,& they were never that reliable even after they'd been building them for a few years. Apart from the engines, they're notorious for water leaks, gearbox problems, poor fit & finish, and electrical silliness.
Lastly, it's suspiciously cheap....you figure it out.

Although well built bodywork wise the Freelander was not the most reliable of vehicles. The TD4 is the best model to buy but the 1.8 was okay if looked after. If you've thoroughly checked the service history and it is sound go for it, £4000 is a good price.

Cheap for the year and model and i strongly reccommend getting it HPI'd oor RAC checked before hand.
