It probably is due to a flucuations of hormones. If it's really bad you may have something called PMS or Premenstrual dysphoric disorder. I would suggest first go with non-drug therapy. So if you know it's about 2 wks before your period, cut down on caffeine products if you drink that a lot, exercise, eat healthier. A lot of times small changes such as that make big changes.
Now if it's really bad, then it seems as though the hormones changes are playing a big role You may want to go to the doctor if non-drug therapy works. There are products that are used for depression but have other indicated uses ie: SSRI's that are taken 2 weeks (aka luteal phase of the menstrual cycle) before your period. It doesn't mean you have depression, but trtmts w/ SSRIs'(selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) have been shown to be help. 2 of them are FDA approved: Fluoxetine (Prozac) there is a brand that is marketed for this called Sarafem. Either is ok b/c they are all fluoxentine marketed under different names. If I needed it, I'd go for the generic fluoxetine b/c it would be cheaper w/ my insurance. Sarafem just makes the drug company more money b/c it comes in a fancy package under a brand name. The other FDA approved medication is called sertraline which is now generically available & the brand name is Zoloft.

Problems beyond that may need other hormonal therapy or whatever else that is suggested by your doctor. But best way to go is to not go on meds if you can, if you have to go for the SSRI.

Hope this helps. Good luck

Well I'm a guy but, you know it's your hormones doing it, I don't know why since you realize what time of the month it is you can't say to yourself you know you're going to be irritable and try to make a concious effort not to let it have so much control over you??? Like when you feel like freaking out or crying can't you just remember you're pms'ing and take a step back and a deep breath and try to think more clearly, or is that not possible? I guess I'll never know cause I'm a guy :-/

that is normal, coz of hormonal changes, i too experience that. I feel depress and then i cry with no reason.its weird feelings. What i do is make myself busy in so many things so that i wont feel that.its natural also for a women to be a moody that's why men keep saying that they don't understand us sometimes. Good luck

it is completely OK to be moody just before, during and after your periods. it happens due to the sudden surge of few hormones and also when the very same hormone levels fall down. and your condition is very wide-spread.
