My periods seem to be too long. I used to think that they last 7 days. But eversince I actually wrote it down, I've discovered that it actually lasts 10 days. Sometimes 11 or even 12, if you count the slightest spotting. Usually there's spotting for a few days, heavier flow for about 2 days, and the rest spotting again. Last period I've had spotting for 4 days before the heavier flow. I've read that a "normal period" should be 7days maximum. Do I have an irregular period then? Is there anything I could take (like herbal stuff) to make it shorter?

Consult your MD.

My period has changed over time. It used to be 3 days, but really heavy. Now it's more like your's: 7-10 days, with several days of spotting at the beginning and at the end.

I had the same problem as you.I went to my doctor and he said sometimes a women or girl will have there period for just seven days and other will have there periods for long. One month I bleed the hole month. The next month I didn't get it at all.I have had spotting before the heavier flows too.So what you are going through is normal.I also went to the doctor to make sure I didn't have thyroids.Don't worry you just find.

i have never spotted before my periods. and its ok to have spotting after your Heavy-flow and regular days. but its always better to check it up with your Gynae.

as far as anything herbal, try taking a lot of mint, it a natural relaxant and helps a great deal in digestion too. also prefer orange juice, strawberries and kiwis instead of Papaya or pineapple. also beat up half a cup of curd with little water and salt (to taste), drink chill garnished with mint leaves, i'm sure it will help you a lot. but this too may vary from one woman to another.

It's possible that you could have an irregular period going such as due to hormone imbalances like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome but I would recommend seeing your dr to have this evaluated.
