Let me tell you something more about the fest -- : --
Ganesh Chaturthi – the Ganesh Festival – is a day on which Lord Ganesha the son of Shiva and Parvati is said to make his presence known on earth for all his devotees. It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi in the Sanskrit, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu languages.
Ganesh Chaturthi is the traditional birthday of Lord Ganesha. The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). This typically falls between 20th August and 15th September in the Gregorian calendar. The festival lasts for up to 10 days, ending on Ananta Chaturdashi.
Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, is widely worshipped as the supreme god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.
Whilst celebrations are held all over India, they are at their most elaborate in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and other areas which were former states of the Maratha Empire - effectively the whole of India, other than the Southern states and the most Northerly ones. Hindus all over the world also celebrate this festival, which is extremely popular with old and young alike.
In the home, for the duration of the festival a murti (an icon or ornately sculptured figurine) of Lord Ganesh is usually the centrepiece of the ritual celebrations. Lord Ganesh is usually depicted in paintings and murti with 4 hands – one with a trishul (trident), one with an ankush, the third holding a lotus and the fourth either a rosary or some modaks, his favourite sweet.
The murti and other images of Lord Ganesh show him sitting on a rat (his steed), with a snake tied around his stomach. His elephantine trunk is almost invariably turned towards the left.
The story as to why Lord Ganesh has the elephantine trunk is famous within Hindu legend. Ganesh was created by goddess Parvati; wife of Lord Shiva. Parvati was often afraid when Shiva was away from home so she created Ganesha out of sandalwood paste that she used for her bath and breathed life into the figure. Ganesh stood guard at the door to their home every time Parvati went to have her bath. However, while Parvati was taking her bath, Lord Shiva returned and as Ganesh did not know him, he didn't allow him to enter. Shiva became enraged and cut off the child's head and entered his house.
After realizing that he had beheaded his own son, Lord Shiva promised Parvati that he would replace the boy’s head with that of the first creature that approached the palace. This turned out to be an elephant, so Lord Shiva replaced Ganesha's head with that of an elephant.
As well as family celebrations, there are also public celebrations of the festival, with local communities competing with each other to put up the biggest murti. The festival is a time for many cultural activities such as songs, dramas and orchestra.
Today, the Ganesh Festival is not only popular with the public, it has become a very important economic activity, especially for the state of Maharashtra. Many artists, industries, and businesses survive on the income which they generate at this time of year. The Ganesh Festival also provides a stage for budding artists to present their art to the public.
