Anything available at the local pet store should be OK, some light would be better though - keep him and the plants happy. My two boys are constantly moving when the lights are on. If you choose a long strappy plant, just trim it to length so that the ends are just at water level and wont go brown.

=) your best bet would probably be to invest in a 2 gallon tank while you're there-even a five or 10 gallon if you have the room. And hey,if you get the 10 gallon,he can have a few little friends. ^_- (My male currently lives in a 29 gallon with zebra danios, neon tetra and 2 mutant platyxmolly fish).
If you decide to stay with the bowl (I'd still advise against it,but it's your choice ultimately) I'd say a very small sprig of anacharis or-as someone else said-java fern. Both plants are lovely for oxygenating the water.

none are really going to work in a bowl because you're going to have to pull them out everytime you clean the bowl and them put them back in it will be a lot of stress on the plant. a floating plant would be okay, but then you have to keep it trimmed so the betta can breathe still, and make sure he doens't get caught.
it would instead suggest a silk plant. move like real plants, won't tear betta's fins, no care needed. alos won't cloud up the water because it died ^_^
but if I'm suggesting what best for the betta I'd suggest a 2.5gallon tank with a heater (bettas are tropical fish, they should have heater!) and a filter. much more suitable for a betta and for plants. if you decide that I'd suggest java moss or java fern. both seem to work well with bettas, who don't like much lights.

Awww, the bowl sounds too small for the poor thing , and plants will just make it smaller. Bettas do like hiding places, but if you want a healthy betta I suggest at least a two gallon tank -- or even one isnt as bad as a bowl.

i can't propose something for a bowl. A betta should not be stored in something under a 5 gallon tank a minimum of. Mine consistently enjoyed the aponogeton (you ought to purchase the bulbs in packets for extra or less $2 in maximum puppy shops) and that they don't want something specific to enhance different than a lighted hood. in case you will get the bulb to sprout it is going to do advantageous. i've got had a number of them that grew to the exterior in 10g tanks, around the real and down the different edge. My bettas enjoyed that and equipped their nests under the leaves and cherished to play around interior the plant :) I additionally opt to point out you do not *want* to alter from gravel. a good form of plant life do merely advantageous in gravel. in case you relatively get into the stay plant life and opt to objective a bigger form then switching out the substrate is probably a reliable thought, yet for many of what became listed there (java fern, moss, and so on), they'll do merely advantageous in gravel.
