to mediate and 'resolve' their conflict, is it selfish to refuse?

No, it's wise to refuse. You run the risk of alienating one (or both) of your parents permanently.

A mediator needs to be absolutely neutral and unbiased. As a family member, you're automatically biased.

Parents should not rely on their children regardless of the age, to resolve their conflicts . Not selfish to refuse .

It is unfair for parents to ask their child to resolve their conflict, regardless of age. They are essentially asking him to choose between his mother and father. Not very nice at all. It is not selfish to refuse.

No I think it is not appropriate for them to do so.. we should NEVER be in the middle of our parents situations. That's why there are counselors and mediators

I agree. Parents who would do this are being extremely unreasonable. It's never a son's job to work out their parent's conflicts.
