Try a Linux distro. How it works is you download an ISO CD image to your hard drive. Then you burn a CD using software like Nero.

You will have to make sure in BIOS that your computer will look at the CD reader before reading the hard drive.

Reboot with the burned CD in the CD reader. You have Linux! Try it, if you like it, you can install it. If you don't like it, it didn't change one thing. If you do install it, it runs much faster.

I use and enjoy Ubuntu very much. Linux makes an old computer run like a modern computer. Ubuntu has a very friendly user forums that will answer just about all your questions.

You can change from a Windows OS platform to a Linux-based platform. But you cannot change it into a Mac.

Installing Linux-based OS can be a nightmare. But there are a few ready-to-install Linux CDs which you may want to consider. For example, Ubuntu.

Another downside to Linux: even till today, not many hardware is supported by Linux.
(i.e: you may successfully install Linux, but you may not be able to install your printer)
