Magna Carta (or 'Great Charter') was effectively a 'Bill of Rights presented to King John of England by his Barons. It was designed to curb the excessive powers that those barons felt the King had taken. It is often held up as the foundation of English liberties, but in reality it had little effect on the average peasant, it was all about the relationship between the King and his nobles. It was amended over the years, however.
