I'm trying to settle a dispute about gender differences in sexual promiscuity. My friend thinks guys sleep around more, I think it's probably about equal.

Where can I go to find out how many total sex partners males and females have on average (perferably in America)?

Heterosexual sex requires both a male and a female.
This means the numbers have to be equal.
Men have more HIV cases from homosexual sex.
I read that in Africa women have more HIV than men because the medical facilities are not as safe.

Men tend to estimate the number of 'conquests' which eventually leads to overestimation.

Women tend to count the number of sexual partners a process which leads to underestimation.

A new study that will be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says that the accounting discrepancy can be more equitable if visits to prostitutes are included. The earlier studies did not include the 'true' number of prostitutes. When an adequate number of prostitutes are included in the scenario, researchers find that men and women have similar numbers of partners with men having more sex, but, with a small number of 'chosen' women.

It is the type of subject that you are unlikely to find accurate figures on, but males use the services of females in the sex industry far more often than vice versa. On the other hand, it is estimated that between 10% & 20% of the children that a man believes are his, actually are not. Paternity tests on divorce, or where child maintenance is claimed, guys!
