I don't know how good highway 101 is past Gilroy. Will it be quicker to take 101 rather than highway 1 to get to Cambria from San Francisco?

I did this same trip and it just depends. We were not too worried about time and we took Highway 1 the views are just beautiful. It is an old highway very windy and the speed limit vaires, even with that said there are certain parts that you just cannot go faster than 30 mph. Highway 101 will get you there a lot faster but, you do not get the views of the ocean. I was amazed at what I saw on Highway 1. Side note there is a great little pizza place in the heart of Cambria you cannot miss it (big sign that says pizza), great service and good chow. Have a great trip!

highway 101 is the preferred route to take as it should only take you about 4 hours. It is a nice highway all the way down. From gilroy go south to Templeton. Then take Highway 46 west and then highway 1 north to cambria.

Highway 1 is more scenic, but would only recommend it if you are going to make a nice weekend out of it. From about half moon bay south to morro bay it can be quite windy and slow. And depending on the weather can be quite dangerous. Big Sur area has the habit of having mudslides if it rains a lot.

I drive this route about once a week and always take 101. Highway 101 is much quicker but Highway 1 is a nice scenic route so it depends what you are looking for.

There is not much on 101 past Gilroy until you get to Salinas.

The 101 is bigger and less traffic the 1 is more scenic with windy hills and cruves very dangerous. I would stick with the 101.

if you can handle more stop and go when going thru little towns on hwy 1 at speeds of 35 and below, I would suggest continuing on hwy 101, which is at freeway speed, unless you are not in a rush and wish to take the scenic route, then venture on the hwy 1..

101 is bigger and faster. But if neither you nor anyone else riding with you get car sick the highway 1 is totally worth it and beautiful.
