I bought my son a 1989 Mercedes 190E (mint condition). Does the car come rustproofed adequately already? If not, what is the best way to do this? Can I simply by the stuff that comes in a spray can and do the undercarriage myself?

Only serious answers please- no need for sarcasm and insults as many folks here like to do

Rustproofing an older car generally does more harm than good. This is because you would be sealing in any incipient rust spots. These wold continue to corrode, but you couldn't monitor them.

The most vulnerable spots on this car are the four jacking tubes. You can go a long way to preventing rust by popping out the rubber corks and flushing them with water every now and then. Once they are completely dry, brush or spray the inside with a light coat of oil, then cork them up again. If the corks are soft or damaged, replace them.

Another area that you should pay attention to are the edges of the fenders. I like to run a hose inside the fenders from time to time. While hosing, I work a hand along the inside of the lip, to make sure that there is no built up mud.

Generally a 1989 on up would be decently rustproofed, and something from a spraycan wouldn't get you any better.

After major storms where they lay down lots of salt (if indeed they use salt in your area - many are switching to sand/salt mix) take it through the car wash and make sure to wash the undercarriage. In fact, if you wash nothing else, wash the undercarriage.

That said, I'm not sure a '89 Mercedes is the best car for snow driving, but I don't know where he lives. Regardless, washing the undercarriage after major dumps of salt is your best bet.

Don't do it, unless...

1. The car will be in the family a minimum of 7-10 years....you state it is mint, and seriously...the chassis on the 190E has been compared to a "mosler vault". Bring it to a lift...and see what is under the car now...if it is light stuff, then have it properly undercoated, but I would spend no more than $250-300.

Doing it yourself?...been their, done that. No...

German cars already come with a healthy dose of undercoating.

I persist with rust data and soundproof for 2 sellers and that i can declare that on a extra recent automobile that's a waste of money. I had them deliver me over a saturn vue the different day. The Saturn is all plastic. it is how they have those dent data doors. So what ought to i for my area spray. nicely the sole area that became metallic became the hood and under the motor vehicle. It took me 10 minutes. yet with an 89 there is not any plastic there. i could be certain that the motor vehicle is extremely sparkling formerly aplying any form of rust proofing. i'm not responsive to any reliable manufacturers contained which could be offered. i take advantage of a commercial grade form great Lakes Chemical. they might have an internet site or something for you to purchase their products. There are 2 that I spray. the 1st one is a caremel colored liquid that gets sprayed on all door hood and trunk seals. additionally I actually have a three foot wand that matches interior the holes on the backside of the doors to spray the interior of them . I additionally spray under the motor vehicle on all seams and interior the physique holes and what not. the different spray is an asphalt based black spray it is plenty thicker and has no antirust fabric in it. that's merely a sound data or undercoat besides the fact which you opt to call it. that's variety of like the bedliner spray yet doesnt get stop as hard. It seems outstanding while performed and it does help with street noise. i'm unsure what the broking fees for this i'm in basic terms an installer they supplty all the sprayers and eguiptment for me. Any way i might say that it could be an particularly reliable thought to have it performed. yet be carefull in case you do it your self to not plug any of the holes interior the backside of the doors or any the place for that count. it is how water drains out. and if plugged the water has nowhere to bypass and this willl reason extra rust issues thatn in case you hadnt sprayed it.

Merc's of that age are fully galvanised at the factory, so they're pretty well prepped for rust proofing.

Still, if you have the time and your son intends on keeping it for a couple of years, then an application of waxoyl wont hurt it by any means.

Before you apply it, get the underside steam cleaned and scrubbed properly, or you'll just be laying the waxoyl on the dirt, which is worse than not applying it at all.

It depends on whether you live in a place that gets snow. If you don't, you don't need the rustproofing. If you live in a snowy region, you might want to consider it (the salt they use to clear the roads is what eats your undercarriage).
