Your cars oil turns brown then black because of the carbon from the firing of the spark plugs..... thats all.

There is usually some of the old oil left throughout the engine even after you have drained it.The next time you change your oil.Pick up a can of motor flush and some cheap oil.Drain old oil only and replace with a cheap oil and motor flush.Do not change filter at this time.Run engine for five minutes and then drain that oil and replace the old filter with a new one.Use a good motor oil that is recommended for your car and at the temperature range for the Season you are in.There are special oils for older engines.Older engines also produce carbon that gets into the drain pan area which also changes the color of the oil.You do not haveto do this double oil change at every oil change.

You have a dirty engine, is my guess. The old oil is not completely drained and is mixing with the new oil. At your next oil change, drain out all the old oil and remove the filter and drain it and put it back in and then fill with a cheap oil. Run the engine for a few minutes and then shut off the motor and drain the oil again, this will flush out a lot of the dirty oil and give you a good starting place. Now replace the filter and refill using a good synthetic oil. After running the engine again, see if your oil isn't a better color.

Well the engine is really a controlled explosion. The DIRT in the oil comes from the burnt carbon.

The burning of gasoline, a hydrocarbon, leaves micro sized particles of carbon, which happen to be black in color, and very abrasive in nature. The oil filter gets a lot of them, but not all of them.

The first time you start your car the proprties in oil break down and create carbon in the oil. Thats why its black after 3000 miles and needs to be changed. Good ole carbon from the heat and friction of the pistons moving at high RPM's.

If your oil changes color immediatly, that means something is wrong.....It means you have been abusing your motor or tranny and the silver (flakes of metal) of the gears or bearings inside are getting into your oil. Let me refrase that, your engine or tranny has been... or is being abused (gears being ground etc) sloffing off fine paricles of metal ending up in your oil changes.

Unless it has a diesel engine, something is wrong. Are you changing the filter with each oil change? The internals of your engine are likely very dirty or sludged up if the fresh oil gets dirty that fast.

the heat causes the color change, it works better that way, so long it isnt jet black and clumpy
