What could it be and how to I stop it ruining my plants?

You can by a dust from a hardware store or nursery that prevents them.

They are borers. You can remove them by hand and save the plant. Look at the leaves, if you see small red oval to round dots, these are the borer eggs, remove them before they hatch into the worm. Dust with Sevin. Prevention is to drape felt-type cloth over the plants to prevent laying of eggs. good luck.

maybe tomato worms.

They are green and very well camouflaged with the leaves. If you have a good eye you can pick them off the plants.

It sounds like what we always called tomato worms - go to a gardening center and they can help you with a pesticide.
