Each musician in a band has a purpose and a following. There are some pretty hot bass players and they are just as necessary as drummers.

The bass is almost a requirement for a song. It keeps the rhythm going with the drums. Think about it, in the 40's there were no guitar players in popular music.
And as for today, the bass can be used as the main instrument in a song. Primus for example is a bass lead band. Tool is another, you will find that the guitar player is playing rhythm while the bass player is playing the lead.
I think it takes more talent to be creative at the bass than at guitar.
And with every great guitar player there is usually a great bass player, Cream with Clapton and Bruce, The Beatles with George, John, and Paul on bass, The who with Pete and The Ox. These are pioneers of the bass, and don't forget ol' Motown, all r&b is centered around the groove that the bass provides.
For some new age talent look up Stu Hamm, Victor Wooten, Billy Sheehan, Les Claypool, Justin Chancelor and tell me they have no talent.

Bass is extremely important in reinforcing the drummer. The importance of your bass guitarist really depends on the type of music you play. For instance, a crappy bass guitar player could never play for Red Hot Chili Peppers or Primus, but could easily play for Godsmack or Nirvana where they usually just blend in and dont stand out. Bass is the easiest instrument to pick up, but can also make or break a tune.

Yes, I like bass players - the bass puts depth into a tune, which would otherwise by thin and harsh. Bass players are a tolerant lot - they put up with all the crap people throw at them because they know their contribution to a band is priceless. Bass players are cool, relaxed, laid back persons, and get well laid more than guitar pickers. A band without a bass player is like tomatoes without salt.

Well, if you play in a band, you will realise that all the instruments are equally important. They all functions TOGETHER as ONE UNIT.
If they say that bass player are not important, i think they ought to get their *** kicked by Paul McCartney, Billy Sheehan, Les Claypool, Flea and co (the rest of bass players in the universe)..

Each instrument has their own level of difficulty. It is true, however, that if you play guitar, playing bass (or learning to play it) will come quite easily. And vice versa.
But bass players are not useless... *cough* Victor Wooten *cough*
