Both were in Boston. The Quartering Act required the Boston Colonists to house British troops in their homes. The British purpose, of course, was to avoid the expenses of building housing facilities for their troops. Certainly, it did not set well with the colonists. The Stamp Act was a tax imposed on tea which led to the protest known as the Boston Tea party. Both were acts that helped those desiring independence from England.

The French and Indian War had been very expensive for the British government. They wanted the American Colonies to help pay for some of the debts owing from the War, and to contribute to the ongoing cost of keeping soldiers in the Colonies. The Colonists did not want to bear these expenses, and thought it unfair that they should have to obey laws passed by the British Parliament, in which they had no representation, no votes.

QUARTERING ACT(S)

There were two Quartering Acts, laws enacted by the British Parliament, dealing with accommodation and meals for British soldiers stationed in the American Colonies.

The first Act (1765) came shortly after the end of the French & Indian War. This Act said that soldiers would usually live in proper barracks or other publicly owned buildings. But that if there was not enough room for the soldiers in those places, they could live in Inns (and similar places) or in uninhabited privately-owned buildings; and that the local people had to provide food and other supplies for the soldiers, at their own expense. The government was not going to pay.

The second Act (1774) also applied throughout the 13 Colonies. In addition to confirming the provisions of the earlier Act, the 1774 Act added that soldiers could be housed in people's homes as well, whether the people wanted them there or not; and that the people would have to bear some of the costs of looking after the soldiers living with them.

STAMP ACT

The Stamp Act of 1765 required all legal documents, permits, commercial contracts, newspapers, wills, pamphlets, and playing cards in the American colonies to carry a tax stamp. Like the Quartering Acts, it was very unpopular. The Colonists threatened physical violence against any officials who tried to collect the tax, and as a result it was never fully enforced. Because it was not working, Parliament repealed it after only 12 months.
