First of all, learning chord structure IS learning music theory, chords are made up of the first, third and fifth notes in a scale, which is essential music theory.
First, learn the parts of the guitar, and their functions.
Then learn the chords, and their minors, as well as warmup excersizes.
After that, take a look at Cyberfret.com, at scales. Dont worry about speed, just work your way up and you'll get faster, building hand strength.
Also keep an eye on techniques if you want a bit of fun, and dont shy away from powerchords. They're frowned upon in general by more "skilled" musicians, but theyre an essential part of rock music.
Also look at timing and improvisation. Learn the Em pentatonic scale, and play about with it, practise bending and hammerons/pulloffs. Try to practise at least an hour a night, and try not to get frustrated.

And remember, 99% of guitarists are eliteist bastards, so dont give up just because someone acts like a *******.

Learning the chords is like learning the foundation of a song. And i dont think it is wrong to learn chords. Every beginner has to start somewhere. Give him a break, man.
If the person has determination and passion, i believe he can do something good with the guitar.
Well, i suggest you to get a few people together and start jamming. At first it will suck, but you can learn faster by playing with other people.

Garfield, you're an idiot, stop demeaning the way some music is taught, I would also like to know what a real instrument is.

Anyways back to the question. After you learn your basic open chords, try some Barre chords. Learn what every frets note is, and then try some scales on for size.

Here is a good site to learn about scales and many chord variations.

Good luck, keep at it, and don't let people like Gar bring you down.

I agree with garfield. Learning to actually play the instrument will make you a better player and musician.
If you don't want to be a better player nor musician, do the world a favor and put down the guitar and never touch it again. :)
