I've tried the patches, cold turkey etc. but nothing has worked for me. I get mean when I don't smoke and it's all I think about until I get my next drag. I want to quit; I just don't want to feel like putting my hand through a window when I don't get my fix. What is a good way to quit smoking?

You've really got to make the decision to quit, and then just do it - no trying, just do it and don't stop doing it.

But there's not much point in tossing your cigs, if you don't fix the underlying reason you smoke. So why do you smoke? Lonely, bored, fidgety, low confidence or self-esteem, caught up in peer pressure, or what?

Once you've quit for 48-72 hours, the nicotine is out of your blood and the rest of your addiction is in your head. The good news is that there are heaps of things you can do to replace your habit - and solve your underlying problems. Healthy snacks and things to do with your hands instead of putting a cig in your mouth, new activities to fill in your old smoking time, etc.

I am on day 5 of not smoking and have been using the patches. I have tried to quit so many times before and failed but this time I seem to be a little more focused. It is hard but a website that I have found helpful is www.quitnet.com. There is a lot of information and support there. I also found that when I want to smoke the best thing to do is to get up and do something else - anything else - go for a walk, clean. In the past five days I have cleaned every closet in my apartment. You said that patches haven't worked for you in the past so maybe you should make an appointment to talk to your doctor about medication for it. I know several people who have had luck with them. Good luck!!

since you smoke that much everyday, your body got adjusted having these poisons running ur body. That's why people with more serious drug problems can actually die by quiting abruptly. You hav to take decrease your amount of cigarettes maybe every few weeks or whatever you're comfortable with. The reason why you were coughing and stuff (tryign to not smoke) was because your body was so used to having 2-5 cigarettes a day. So each week you should decrease slowly from 2-4cigarettes, then another few weeks, 2-3, then so on.

First, you have to really want to quit. Really. That has to be what drives you harder than your desire to smoke.

I quit cold turkey and I think it's the best way. It is hard, but once you get past the withdrawal from nicotine it gets easier.

An observation--I don't think you really want to quit enough to do it in your present state of mind. It's okay to try, and every time you try and manage to stay clean for a while it will build your confidence and reinforce your desire to quit. But expect failure until you are at the point where you want to quit a lot more than you want to smoke. And be honest with yourself.

Patches and gum are helpful, but I never had much success with them. You have to be ready to endure some discomfort and to struggle with your habit. But it can be done.

Have faith in yourself.

Go to your doctor and ask for something called Chantrix. It is new and pretty cool. You start with a low dose and work up. It stops you from taking in the nicotine. You don't even start trying to quit until you have been on it a week. It is much better than hitting yourself over the head with the cold turkey hammer.
Do watch out for nausea. Be sure and take it after you eat.

their is no good way to quit smoking, you just have to have your mind in the right place. for me i am two weeks smoke free and i am currently using the patch along with smoke away, also Wellbutrin. let me just say the first four days were the hardest. it gets easier, i promise now i am just using the patch, just to calm the craving that i get every once in a while. be sure to stay busy with your hands. the best of luck on your journey to a healthier life =)

you need a distraction - bit your nails, chew gum.

I memorized a long passage and whenever I got an urge, I repeated the passage.

Know that (if you're honest with yourself) you'll crave cigarettes pretty much the rest of your life (ones that's aren't honest become the "bad ex-smokers").
