It is possible to sometimes recover data that has been deleted but you would have to do it asap as the sector(s) on the disks that were used to store your old file may be replaced by new ones. Usually when you delete, the index is removed so you will not be able to find it and that space is made available for new data but the data is still physically there on the disk until that space is reallocated and overwritten with new information.
In the source below I have included a link that explains how a hard disk works and also a few links to sites that over a data recovery utility. There are many more on the web but I have not tried any of them myself so can't make a recommendation. There are some that come will have reviews and also you can go to download.com and find utilities there with reviews too and you can make your selection that way. I hope this helps.

How do hard drives work check this link out.

Think of the file as a 0101 on a digital clock, when you erase the file the computer puts a 8888 over where the file was. and when you save another file to it, it just writes over the top. with a darker pen in a since... Its way more complex then that but its the basics. You need a special tool or software to get the file back, and it has to be picked out of a long list of code. very time consuming..

Generally speaking, there are lots of software out there that will recover lost data, but I'm not sure how effective these would be, you could always send it to professional data restorers who would probably be able to save your data but these are expensive. I've always said that prevention is better than cure, if you have important files on your hard disk, back them up to other media such as cd's etc...

HI, if u deleted files and empty recycle bin... literary they are gone... but there are tools available on net.
YES...the hard drive will replace old files if you save new ones, if its almost full to capacity and u deleted something to free up space it will start over writing stuff.
Now, there must be some open source project to retrieve deleted files... google it...
or try this :-

Hope this helps.

Well hard drive peripheral devices that used to store your files in your computer. It has its own capacity how much files you are storing in your hard disk. When you delete a file, the file you have delete will go to the recycle been. The recycle been is were deleted files are stored. You may recover your deleted files by pressing restore all items from its recent folders. Empty the recycle been will loose your deleted files, that means those file are not saved in your hard disk and you cannot recover your files anymore.

When you delete something, it is not really erased. The space that it occupies is just made available to write on. Untill it is overwritten with something else, it is still there. There is various software you can get that will restore the data. You can find some on the internet, I dont know if theres any free ones though.

If the sector (from which your data was deleted) is still free, you can recover data from that using some data recovery tools. But if this sector has been used, you have lost the data.

No, formatting overwrites all your previous records on the rigidity. the only exception to that's a distinctiveness lab which has kit that could in specific circumstances make certain what lies below the newly written records. those kit are used in regulation enforcement and for different severe value records restoration, and in specific circumstances in the corporate international to restoration efficient records. i've got study claims that those procedures can peer down into seven layers of before written records, besides the shown fact that that's no longer likely you would be waiting to arise with the money for any of those procedures.

Hard drives work in a very strange way. I can't really explain, but files are recoverable. The best program to do it with is Norton Ghost, and if you can't afford it... these are some alternative programs.
