I don't believe they ever explained it in the movie. Any ideas?

If you haven't seen it, it's a movie about a teacher in an inner-city, who has a serious drug problem. I know a "half nelson" is a wrestling move, but the movie doesn't have anything to do with wrestling. Anyone who's seen the movie and can help would be appreicated.

Well, a half nelson is a wrestling hold where you tie up your opponent's arm above his head and put pressure on the neck. Not sure if that helps.

As the others have pointed out, "half nelson" is a wrestling term. All the characters in the movie were wrestling with some kind of problem or moral dilemma. The title reflects their individual struggles.
