Yeah. I'm a big Buffy fan. I just don't know the name of this villian. And extra kudos if you can tell me the name of the episode too.

My guess is "Sweet" the villain of the episode Once More With Feeling. He was named Sweet in the shooting script, but never on screen. The Scoobies defeated him (Buffy probably killed his 3 henchmen) he was not really destroyed, fought, or killed. I'm a big Buffy fan too.

There's more than one - as others have said, Sweet (the demon in "Once More With Feeling", the musical episode) and the First are definite examples (though I'd argue Ethan Rayne was indeed completely defeated - I don't think the Initiative is EVER going to let that guy go...).

But I think you may be thinking of Warren - he was on of the evil Trio (with Jonathan and Andrew) who more or less were the main villains of season 6 (until willow turned evil in the third to last episode, that is). Buffy never physically fought him, and she herself didn't defeat or slay him - Evil Willow killed him in the episode "Villains".

P.S.: On second thought, Buffy HAS physically fought Warren - in the episode where he had super strength, they had a pretty well, matched fight, actually. Sorry, forgot about that earlier.

I still think, though, that it's impossible to decide between the First and Sweet - neither can ever be defeated - the First is part of all evil, so as long as Evil exists, it exists; and Sweet is a certain style of thinking, feeling, music, showmanship - Joss Whedon says in the audio commentary that they didn't have Buffy kill him because what he stands for can never die.

The First is incorporeal, so Buffy CAN'T physically fight it, and Buffy definitely didn't fight Sweet, so... Also, Sweet wasn't really defeated - he just decided to waive the contract when it turned out that Xander, not Dawn, hat summoned him. But he still got what he wanted - a lot of havoc, and people sharing feelings they'd rather have kept to themselves.

The First was what the villian refered to was called. It first appeared briefly in the 3rd season and was back for the final. It was the first evil and was noncoporeal, so Buffy could not fight it only the henchmen. The First was defeated only in its plans and that destroyed Sunnydale. The First can not die and if Joss where to have continued with the show, it would have came back to either Buffy or perhaps Angel. I miss both shows, but I hear there may be an animated series in the works.

And let's not forget Ethan Rayne. When we last saw him, he was being carted off by members of the Initiative (in the episode where Giles had been turned into a demon). But while the Scoobies often were fighting against his plans, Buffy didn't ever really fight him. He certainly wasn't slain, nor completely defeated. Who knows what happened to him? He just kind of disappeared from that point on.
