Really??? It is the Republican Party that has always been about state rights??? And here I thought it was the then southern Democratic Party that left the union over "state rights" and the northern Republican Party that was all about federal power.

You are correct about the history of the parties but that all change with the civil rights movement. Now Republicans are for state's rights and Democrats, Big Government. Southern Democrats in the 60's were upset with the Democratic party supporting civil rights and switch to the Republican party. This made the Republicans change their stance on states rights.
