There's a bit of a price difference so the choice depends on what you are looking for. The acer is obviously a better spec as it is dual core. My son has one similar to the Acer 5633. He has the 5612 which you can get for a shade under £500 at Currys. My son uses his laptop for web design.

I also have an Acer model 3692 which I bought as I was that impressed with My son' Acer. I only use mine to surf the net, answer questions on yahoo and do the odd bit of word and excel. My Acer copes fine with this and is the same spec as the hp one

The Hp comes with xp pro which is proven while the Acer comes with Vista which isn't.

Although I like Acer very much we are looking to buy a third laptop for my daughter and the hp one looks very good at the price. A friend at works has just got the hp one with the lesser spec of 512mb ram from ebuyer and is delighted with it. It came next day.

Save yourself some money and buy the HP

Let me know how it is so I can make my own mind up for my daughter.

Hope this help/Extremely happy Acer owner

This depends your needs and priorities. If you need to do lots of video intensive stuff or high processor intensive stuff like architectural work for example, then you will want to go with the Acer. The Acer has a strong video card where as the HP does not. The Acer also has a stronger CPU. The Acer also has Windows Vista where as the HP only has XP. Not a big deal, but Vista is kind of nice now that I have tried it.

If you are just on a budget then the HP is actually a nice computer, especially if you are just doing normal things like using microsoft office or regular media stuff like movies and what not. The other cool thing I noticed on the HP is that it has a biometric fingerprint scanner, which means if you wanted, you could just scan your finger instead of having to enter in paswords, which is rather nice. I'm sure you could find something useful to do with the 235.01 that you would save with the HP if you don't need all the extra power form the Acer.

Hope that helps you. Feel free to let me know if anything is unclear.

Go with the Acer. It has the latest processor, the Intel Core 2 Duo processors (yes, two processors) and apparently a built in dedicated graphics card to help reduce the load on the CPU and memory. The Acer has a great L2 cache and FSB, and it's memory is expandable up to 4 GB.

The Sempron processor in the HP is the equivalent of an Intel Celeron: way too slow. Today, programs have become more demanding and complex, you need a fast PC.

The Acer is worth the money in the long run. It costs more now, but if you get the HP, you will end up buying the Acer not too long after as programs become more demanding and complex...

My choice would be the HP laptop on the basis that Windows XP has been subjected to five years of bug testing, compared with 1 and a half months for vista.

However if you need, or have programs designed for 2 processing cores, the acer option may be a better bet. The HP laptop appears to be aimed at a business market, where as Acer seems more entertainment based.

i'd purchase the HP because it has more beneficial RAM so it has a lot less chance of it freezing up and it also has a speedier processer in case you want a digicam you should purchase a cheap digicam with more beneficial megapixals.
