well..zone of inhibition: the zone which is results from the reaction bertween specific bacteria and its antibiotic....you can obsreve it easily cultivate bacteria for example e.coli on muller hinton agar then make wells using a corck then for example fill the wells with the dead sea water,after that incubation at 37 c for 24 hour,,you will see the zone of inhibition...Note: the experiment done under steril condition........have fun with it

That's a really hard question to answer without any context, as it has different meanings in different areas of biology.

A classical use of that phrase is the area of agar that contains no micro-organisms that forms around certain bacteria growing on agar. Or, it is a dead area around a paper disk impregnated with antibiotics.

If you are comparing various strains of bacteria against the same concentration of antibiotic, the smaller the zone of inhibition the more antibiotic resistant the bactaria is.
